THE WIDE-LEG WARDROBE

Reader guide

Fabrics & care

Read fiber, construction and care as separate pieces of information. These guides help you inspect the exact garment rather than applying one rule to every pair of wide trousers.

Separate the buying question from the laundry question

Use the fabric-selection guide while you are still comparing trousers. The linen-versus-cotton and rayon-versus-polyester articles narrow particular tradeoffs, while the silk-versus-satin guide separates fiber identity from a fabric construction. The hot-weather discussion explains why a name alone cannot rank the comfort of two finished garments.

Once a pair is yours, choose the care article that matches its verified material and the job you need to do. Washing linen, ironing linen and asking whether linen may shrink are distinct tasks. Rayon washing, attempts to recover shrinkage and steaming likewise have different limits. Start with the attached garment label even when a seller's title uses another fabric description.

The remaining guides address problems that cross material categories: static, storage, pleated construction and waistband elastic. For visible underlayers, use the coverage guide rather than treating additional washing or ironing as a solution. If the trousers have a lining or decorative components, those parts can change the appropriate routine for the entire garment.
